Dental implants can replace missing teeth permanently, resulting in a very natural appearance and improved oral function. Your ability to speak and eat can be affected when you are missing teeth, not to mention the effects lost teeth can have on the look of your smile. A large gap along your gums can also lead to shifting and movement of surrounding teeth, or other dental issues. Dental implants are designed to become a permanent part of your mouth just like your natural teeth. This makes the additional maintenance and other issues found with traditional dentures unnecessary – daily brushing and flossing is sufficient. Dental implants can also be used for anchored denture procedures, enhancing the strength and stability of dentures and reducing the chances of slippage along the gums.

Candidates for Dental Implants
Dental implants can be a highly beneficial option for those with missing or severely damaged teeth. The solution mimics the natural structure of the tooth, from the root to the actual tooth’s appearance. While dental implants can significantly improve the form and function of your teeth, Dr. Marianna Farber must first determine you are a good candidate for the procedure before moving forward with the life-changing restoration.
Patients exhibiting the following characteristics are typically considered good candidates for dental implant surgery:
- One or more missing teeth
- Fully developed jawbone
- Adequate amount of jawbone density
- Reasonably healthy gum tissue
- No medical conditions that could complicate healing post-surgery
- Not currently undergoing cancer treatment
While these factors often describe the ideal candidate for dental implants, you should schedule a consultation with our dentist to fully understand if you qualify. During your appointment, she will examine your gums and jaw to determine whether they may provide adequate support for the implant’s titanium post to be anchored in the jawbone. Should you discover you are not a good candidate, Dr. Farber will help you find an alternative solution to help you reach your goals.
The Dental Implant Process
Once Dr. Farber has determined that you are a candidate for dental implants, the implant (composed of a titanium post) will be placed by an experienced periodontist or oral surgeon. If your jawbone is not strong enough to support dental implants, Dr. Farber can recommend an appropriate alternative, such as dental bridges and crowns.
Once the dental implant has been placed below the gumline, it will take a few months for it to fuse with the jawbone. During the fusion process, a temporary crown can be placed on top of the implant. As the titanium post and the bone bond together, the implant acts like a strong tooth root. After fusion is complete, Dr. Farber will attach a customized permanent crown. The crown will be made by our renowned dental lab, Jason J. Kim Dental Aesthetics, that we utilize to craft our restorations. At the Jason Kim lab, patients receive personalized treatment plans from the Master Ceramist, and have the opportunity to view their potential results prior to the procedure, using a program called PreNew PreView®.
Since dental implants are designed to mimic your natural teeth, they typically have permanent results. In fact, they are made to result in such a natural appearance and comfortable fit, you may have trouble distinguishing the implant from your original teeth!
